Lisa Walker is the offspring of several generations of Kentucky missionaries, preachers, bootleggers and dirt-track racers. She grew up singing in church, like most of her relatives. Walker was heavily influenced early-on by 1960s British and American pop and psychedelia, which blended with other childhood influences that include Appalachian folk tunes sung by her grandmother, a vast knowledge of Gospel hymns and her dad’s Hindustani classical records. She formed her first band, Wussy, with Chuck Cleaver (of Cincinnati band Ass Ponys) in 2001, the result of an impromptu duo performance to help Cleaver combat a brief period of stage fright. The Magic Words came about shortly afterwards, formed as a solo recording project in 2004 - primarily created as a means to develop song ideas. Recorded as off-the-cuff takes in bedroom and living room settings from 2004-09, many of these songs would eventually make their way onto future Wussy LPs. However, the sparse, catchy arrangements of the original Magic Words demos allow more space for Walker’s writing and vocal talents to shine through the fuzzy haze of driven delayed guitar, bubbling effects and drum machines, conveying “a sense of mystery and immediacy, much like PJ Harvey's amazing 4-Track Demos” (Mike Breen, Cincinnati CityBeat).

Damnably releases an 18 track compilation of Junk Train (2006) & The Day We Ran Away (2013) on limited edition Grey & White Cassettes with cassette motif t-shirts designed by Lisa walker. Remastered by Matthew Barnhart who has made a name for himself as a live, recording and mastering engineer (Bedhead, The New Year, The Gotobeds, Metz. Nots, Xetas, SuperChunk, Silkworm).

Recorded and mixed by Lisa Walker who also plays all the guitar, some keys and programed the drum machine except for Summertime co-produced by David Enright and Watch Yer Back (Acoustic) is co-produced by Bill Alletzhauser. Junk Train was released on CD by Agriculture Records in 2006 but The Day We Ran Away was only released on Bandcamp. Both releases feature the bare bones of songs such as Maglite, Rigor Mortis, Melody Ranch, Jonah, Little Paper Birds which would go on to become fully formed Wussy classics on Left For Dead (2007) & Wussy (2009) but others such as ‘Loaded For Bear’ stand out and are just perfect in their own lo-fi drone-dream-pop way.

Wussy were once described by former Homestead Records boss and veteran alternative radio DJ Ken Katkin like this: “In Lisa Walker, Chuck had joined forces with the next generation’s contender for poet laureate of middle-America’s working class.”
It’s fair to say Lisa has an ear for language and a knack for transforming the mood on turn of phrase. Black comedy and B-Movie cinematic macabre and mystery wash through the lyrics. Millie Christine harks back to the conjoined twins Millie and Christine McKoy who travelled the world performing song & dance and went by the name “The Two-Headed Nightingale”. Summertime musically shares a chorus with ‘North Sea Girls’ from the Attica!(2014) album. Hello Goodnight, New American Standard, Melody Ranch ask more questions than they answer but religion, communication and memory are key themes and an unreliable narrator
